Someone filed a DMCA counter-notice: what happens?

A person whose material was removed may submit a counter-notification alleging mistake or misidentification. Under the U.S. Section 512 process, receiving one changes the legal timing and potential next steps.

What to do

  1. Confirm whether you received an actual statutory counter-notice or only a platform support reply.
  2. Read the identified original copyrighted work and the content restored or proposed for restoration.
  3. Check what the provider says about notice forwarding and the relevant statutory timing.
  4. The U.S. framework generally calls for restoration in no less than 10 and no more than 14 business days unless the claimant notifies the provider of a qualifying court action.
  5. If you are the copyright owner, consider independent legal advice before taking action in court.
  6. If you are the uploader, do not file a counter-notice containing false statements about rights or removal errors.
  7. Record deadlines, communications and verified URL status without claiming a permanent win from a temporary takedown.
Counter-notices can expose parties to legal obligations, including jurisdiction statements. Reclaim does not act as your attorney.

Common questions

Does submitting a report guarantee removal?

No. Each platform assesses its own policies, and a submitted report is not proof of removal.

Should I send the intimate file to Reclaim to start?

No. Begin with the public link when possible and avoid sharing unnecessary copies of sensitive media.
